A truly rare Sterling Silver late 18th century Nutmeg Grater from the Philadelphia Aristocrat Sarah (Sally) Morris. This is an egg-shaped grater that has different flowers on each end. It is inscribed on the top half with initials l that I can’t make out but it’s two set of initials to another. It has a date of 1790. Then it has “Sarah Wistar to Sarah Hopkinson 1860. I can’t see any silver maker marks or any other identifying marks. It measures 1.75” x 1 inch. From a collection we have.
Family:
Sarah (Sally) Morris (b. 1758), to her daughter
Sarah Wistar (ca. 1786-1866) to her niece
Sarah Wistar Hopkinson (b. ca. 1826, m. 1851)
Provenance:
Philadelphia aristocrat Rebecca Wistar (1735/36-1791), directly to Rebecca’s daughter Sally Morris. In 1755 Rebecca Wistar married Samuel Morris, and Sarah (Sally) was born in 1758.
Sally Morris married her cousin Richard Wistar, son of her mother’s older brother Richard. Their daughter Sarah Wistar never married, and passed the nutmeg grater to her niece Sarah, daughter of her brother Richard, who married in 1851 Joseph Hopkinson.
