Gorham Whiting Sterling Silver Wedding Bouquet Basket Circa 1925

A Large Gorham/Whiting Sterling Silver Wedding Bouquet Basket stands 14 inches tall, 11.5 inches across and 8 inches deep.  Marked on the bottom with Gorham/Whiting mark and date mark of 1925.

Sterling silver wedding baskets evolved from popular handled baskets used in the early 19th century. Initially, flower girls would scatter petals from silver baskets during the ceremony, and later, the baskets held the bridal bouquet at the reception. These baskets became a symbol of the wedding and were often placed on the dining room table after the ceremony. Over time, designs became more varied, and glass inserts began to be used alongside the silver.
