Frederick Carl Smith was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 7, 1868. He studied at the Cincinnati Art School, Ohio Mechanics' Institute, and Académie Julian in Paris under Bouguereau, Ferrier, and Constant. After returning from Europe, he worked for seventeen years in Washington, DC as a portraitist before moving to Pasadena in 1917. Smith was active with the art colony in Laguna Beach and was a founding member of the art association there in 1918. Primarily a portraitist, he also painted marines. Many of his works were of Northern California Coastal towns. He died in Pasadena on November 16, 1955.
